Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) is Microsoft’s cloud-based identity and access management service, which helps your employees sign in and access resources in:
External resources, such as Microsoft Office 365, the Azure portal, and thousands of other SaaS applications.
Internal resources, such as apps on your corporate network and intranet, along with any cloud apps developed by your own organization.
Azure AD is not a replacement for Windows Server Active Directory. If
you already have an on-premises directory, it can be extended to the cloud
using the directory integration capabilities of Azure AD. In these scenarios,
users and groups in the on-premises directory are synced to
Azure AD using a tool such as Azure Active Directory Sync (AAD Sync).
This has the benefit of users being able to authenticate against Windows
Server Active Directory when accessing on-premises applications and resources,
and authenticating against Azure AD when accessing cloud applications. The user
can authenticate using the same credentials in both scenarios.
